A few weeks back, I had the opportunity to speak to a high school architecture class. I think I got just as much out of it as they did.
Each day, a few students have to get up and give a report on a current event influencing design. I was so surprised to see how well versed they were on sustainability. After their presentations, I gave my twenty minute soap box about how college was and what drove me to start my own practice. I was so happy with the questions they shot back at me. One young man, future principal I’m sure, asked the most practical question, “How do you get paid for all the up front work you do?” What a great question!! I had to take it in for a minute before I shot back, “I have no idea…”
I think the future of are profession is in safe hands, at least for this new generation of young architects.

You get paid back for the up front work you do by the referrals you get from the client you did the up front work for. It’s all PR…
